Noosa Hysteric Hill Climb

A real drivers event and probably my favourite track to have a spirited run on. But if you don't treat it with respect, it will bite!

The Noosa Beach Classic Car Club and the HRCCQ co-run the event and do a damn good job I might add. Set in beautiful National Park, on some of the twistiest bits of tarmac on the Sunshine Coast, this is a premium event for competitors and spectators alike.

The event generally attracts around 170 competitors, ranging from early 1930 racing "specials", to road going supercars like my 1963 Falcon Sprint (heh-heh). If you like seeing powerful cars getting sideways, in the type of surroundings your better half will appreciate, this is the event for you!!

We will be racing our

  • 1963 Ford Falcon Sprint (Class winner 2003, First loser 04, 05,06)
  • 1973 911 Carrera RS Porsche (Class winner 2003, 2004, Chickened out 05 & 06!)

John English strutting his 6 pack stuff.

It's going to be muscle car madness! Going from last years pre-73 touring car group, there will be at least;

  • 8x 1964-1970 Mustangs, ranging from 289's to 429's and one 66 Shelby.
  • 9x GT Falcons; XR, XT, XW, XY, XA & XB .
  • 1x HK GTS 327 Monaro (Starlight blue, just beautiful)
  • 1x 1968 Rambler Javelin.
  • 1x Torana GTR XU-1
  • 1x Crazy Dutchman in a BMW 2002
    and the dark horse...
  • 1x Leyland P76

With a capacity field of 160 hi-performance, classic and muscle cars, it is going to be a big weekend!

Come along, say hello and get trapped in the corporate tent, just tell them Phillip "Hollywood" Ross from Shannons sent you.

Peter Brock Tribute

at the Supercheap

Bathurst 1000

Excerpts from an AVESCO press release:

A perpetual ‘Peter Brock Trophy' will be awarded to the winners of the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 and a flowing tribute to the legend of Australian motor sport featuring many of his winning cars along with his co-drivers will be held before this year's iconic Australian race begins.

V8 Supercars Australia will dedicate the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 to Peter Brock with the permanent trophy that all drivers will aspire to win and walk in the footsteps of the great man. It will be etched with the words Peter Brock Trophy and underscored with ‘King of the Mountain'.

The front row of the starting grid in 2006 will also be left vacant as a dedication to his achievements at Mount Panorama. Brock still holds the record for the most pole positions with six starts from number one on the grid.

All V8 Supercars competing at the event will also be supplied with 05 decals, the number that Peter Brock raced in that was retired by the sport in 1997, to apply to their cars.

“This is a great honour for our family and we deeply appreciate it,” said Lewis Brock, brother of the great racer.

V8 Supercars Australia is attempting to source as many of the cars that Peter Brock won with on the mountain for a Champions Lap of Honour.

It is hoped the cars will be driven by Peter Brock's son James, former co-drivers Brian Sampson, Jim Richards, Larry Perkins, John Harvey, David Parsons and Peter McLeod, based on their availability.

Present day drivers Mark Skaife and Craig Lowndes, childhood prodigies of their hero and mentor, will also be invited to drive in the parade depending on the availability of cars and former co-drivers.

The Champions Lap of Honour will be driven at low speed to give fans time to reflect and say a final farewell.

This will be followed by a special homily to be delivered by V8 Supercars Australia Chaplain Gary Coleman followed by a minutes silence as a mark of respect.

Iva Davies, an Australia icon in his own right, will then perform his version of ‘Heroes' to a montage of footage featuring the life and times of Peter Brock.

This will be followed by the national anthem, the formation of the grid and the start of the 2006 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 at 10.00am.

An outline of the Bathurst Peter Brock Tribute on Sunday October 8 is as follows:

9.00am: A ‘Gathering on the Grid' of family and close friends

9.02am: Champion's Lap of Honour commences

9.22am: Chaplain's Address

9.24am: One minute's silence

9.25am: ‘Heroes' performed by Iva Davies

9.30am: V8 Supercars form in pit lane

9.35am: Australian national anthem

9.40am: Pit exit opens

9.45am: Cars assemble on the grid

10.00am: The Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000

The nine cars that Peter Brock drove to Bathurst wins were:

1972: Holden Torana LJ GTR XU1

1975: Holden Torana L34 with Brian Sampson

1978: Holden Torana A9X with Jim Richards

1979: Holden Torana A9X with Jim Richards

1980: Holden Commodore VC with Jim Richards

1982: Holden Commodore VH with Larry Perkins

1983: Holden Commodore VH with Larry Perkins and John Harvey

1984: Holden Commodore VK with Larry Perkins

1987: Holden Commodore VL with David Parsons and Peter McLeod

What a great race and weekend!

I don't think we would be alone in thinking that Craig Lowndes was a very deserved winner (Along with Jamie Whincup too!) and the Brock tribute was very moving. It was a nice touch just sending the cars around slowly, letting everyone drink it in, so kudos to whoever thought of that.

It is hard to believe PB is gone, and after watching that race unfold, I think he is still around in some way?

Well done to all involved in making a HUGE and emotional weekend a success.

"2006 Bathurst Legends"

Mighty Roger Ealand, despite a severe nationality impediment, is a very good operator. The eccentric pom and his merry gang of revheads are set on one agenda for Speed On Tweed;

"better, not bigger."

It's already got the best automotive festival atmosphere on the Eastern Seaboard by a country mile. With a couple more tweaks to the track and Roger's hell bent attitude on improving Speed on Tweed's already brilliant, family fun atmosphere, this is going to be an event sooooo good it will be outlawed; purely on the grounds of having way too much fun.

For this year, further track and spectating improvements have been made and Roger wants at least 60 world class (Read mind blowing!) cars zooming around the challenging street circuit that constitutes a Speed on Tweed event.

Being an energetic Pom named Roger, he gets what he wants. So your going to be seeing GT40's, Lola T-70's, Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing's, D Type Jag's and Genuine 1963 Falcon Sprint's!! (heh-heh). Getting driven very hard by people who are afraid of getting a Right Royal Rogering.

Along with the nightly festivities that allow race cars paraded on the main street and open air dining on fine food and bloody nice beer.

We will showing our;

  • 1970 Bathurst winning XWGTHO "64E"
  • 1987 Brock Bathurst wining VL Commodore
  • 1973 Porsche Carrera RS , driven by Dan "Gurney" Bowden
  • & keeping in the theme of the event, we will have a couple of   "Bathurst Legends" along too (Stay tuned... :- )

Gurney in the Ex John Dawson Damer, 1973 Carrera RS, desperately trying to get a Rogering.

Also appearing will be;

  • Patron of the event and all round legend, Vern Schuppan.
  • KB.
  • Alan Moffat.
  • Just to make sure everything is going OK, Frank Gardner.
  • Roger Ealand in something suitably silly.
  • Clive Noonan, of Noonan Motorsport fame, in something sillier.
  • Ex- Frank Gardner Mk 3b Lola T-70 (Look it up kids, this thing is pure horn!)
  • 1964 / 72 Mk1 Ford GT40 ( Yes there will be 2 real ones)
  • D-Type Jaguar (If one needs to ask....)
  • Indianapolis Offenhauser special
  • Heaps of Muscle Cars comprising of Mustangs, Monaro's, Camaro's, GT Falcon's and Torana's.
  • If Becks are sponsoring it again; lots of hangovers on sunday morning.

Speed On Tweed is located in Murwillumbah (Mur-wool-um-bah), just 20 minutes south of the Gold Coast Airport in Northern NSW.

The event runs on the 15th, 16th and 17th of September.

BE AFRAID.

It will be that good, your head will hurt.

Fathers day just got a damn site better,as far as the crew at Bowden's Own are concerned!

The big boy's at Chevron Publishing and the A.R.D.C. have decided that the two dates should be as one and create a day that rev head dads will REALLY appreciate.

Bugger socks and bodgy aftershave, If you want to see an awesome display of Australia's greatest muscle cars and the legends that drove them.

Make sure you keep September 2-3rd, 2006 free as can be.

Going from what happened at a washed out 2005 event, 2006 is going to be MASSIVE!!

We will be bringing our:

  • 1965 Geoghegan Mustang

  • The Superfalcon

  • KB Camaro

September 2 - 3rd 2006.

Eastern Creek Raceway, New South Wales.

www.chevron.com.au/musclecar_masters.html

WOW, what a big weekend!

HUGE fields of Group C and A, plus a massive field of Group N. All of which were record breaking!!! Not to mention more legends and legendary cars than you could poke a tonne of sticks with.

It was good and it was BIG!

Huge thanks to all the people at Chevron and the ARDC and of course, all the entrants, without you all it would be just a dash boring?!!

The master blasts were super good fun, with all cars performing well enough to really please the crowds. They are a great format and really thin the excuses for not getting your legendary car out there and racing around.

Another big thank-you to all the people who gave us the thumbs up about our products and the cars that we look after. We really do appreciate being appreciated and it makes those big trips very worthwhile.

Bring on the masters 2007!!!!

Leyburn Motor Sprints

Woo-Hoo! Great weekend, resulting in a win for the old Sprint! I didn't even change the tyre pressures or put fuel in it! I'll have to savour the moment, as it's rare motorsport is so 'simple'.

Big thanks to the people and organisers at Leyburn and to Clive Noonan Motorsport for getting the car absolutely singing and Jolly Roger marine for the Gold Trac diff.

What a difference that made. Bloody amazing really.

Queensland

Vs.

Victoria

1 Weekend of pure

grudge match racing.

A group of cheeky Mexicans from Victoria are coming up to Queensland to compete in the annual Muscle Car Shootout, held in the middle of May.

They have been openly boasting about how their cars, driving and beer is vastly superior to that of the local, more humble Queenslanders.

The quiet locals have been provoked enough.

To quote Douglas "Chippo" Chippendale:

"We shall beat them on the race tracks and we shall beat them in the pubs. No Victorian is coming up here and beating us in any way, shape, or form."

I feel that, while Chippo is correct, the Vicco's will definitely beat us at losing,

as they are very good at that.

The above story is what started it all. BORT member Phil "Grunt" Grant decided to slag off QLD beer,

whilst talking up his negligible driving ability.

While we agree with him, our local beer is mostly crap. Only WE can say such things.

Now the Vicco's are going to PAY.

  • How the QLD Racers are going to do it:
  • Chippo is going to furiously polish his dipstick
  • Marty White is going to triple turbo charge his Mustang
  • Gurney might show up
  • Shane Cowham is going to remove thy finger.
  • Jim Hodgson is going all out in his Sports Sedan ultra rare 1964 Mustang Fastback; He's taking out the cigarette lighter & putting helium in his tyres.
  • Paul McCamely is going to incite easily angered FPV owners into actually racing their cars.
  • I'm going to take the air filter off the Falcon Sprint.
  • What the Victorian racers are going to do:
  • Wet their pants.
  • Come up with some brillant excuses (Weather's always a good starter lads).
  • Bring up a keg of VB.
  • & if in the unlikely event that they win: Cheat.

Car Collection Tour

Click here for details on this first time opportuntity!

What a fantastic way to spend a couple of sundays.

To say that everyone at the Bowden's Own team was flattered by the level of attendance and the distances covered to get here, is a huge understatement.

People's reactions were very moving also, with many commenting that it was an experience of a lifetime. Guest appearances by KB and his mighty Camaro were lapped up, as was the chance to hear the GT40 and the even mightier Superfalcon.

I'm not at liberty to print what people wrote in our guestbook or emailed to us later, but those kind of positive messages are the perfect tonic for the excellence needed to outwit the big players in the car care game.

We are going to be the finest car care company in the world. And after hanging out with and hearing great feedback from the few hundred people we entertained over the last couple of weekends, we know that with our customers support that we are going to do it well.

To answer what everyone is asking: "Are we going to do it again?", very probably yes. But not in 06.

  • 1963 Ford Falcon Sprint (Class winner 2003, First loser 04)
  • 1973 911 Carrera RS Porsche (Class winner 2003, 2004)

John English strutting his 6 pack stuff.

It's going to be muscle car madness! Going from last years pre-73 touring car group, there will be at least;

Come along, say hello and get trapped in the corporate tent, just tell them Phillip Ross from Shannons sent you.

If you are going to check it out on their website, use the yellow "street signs" to navigate.

www.noosacarclub.com

12th and 13th of November.

The Hillclimb is on Gyndier Drive, Tewantin, about 10 minutes drive west from Noosa.

What a great weekend! The old Falcon Sprint ran like a jet and the track was the best it has ever been. The track record tumbled down to 55 seconds and of 180 entrants there were only 4 crashes! Not too bad for a bunch of amatuers

The highlights were definetley Vern Schuppan in the 962 Porsche and KB in the Procar Monaro. To see a 962 belting up the hill amongst the gum trees, blowing flames while popping against the rev limiter was not only spectacular, but also kind of surreal, in the pinch yourself manner of surreality. HUGE thanks to Rob Sherrard for making all that happen. Bloody good effort! Plus congrats for winning your class in the GT40 (P1109).

In the pre-1965 Touring Cars over 2000cc, I managed a second (again) against Jim Hodgson and his ultra rare 1964 Mustang fast back. The car went well so, I'm pretty stoked with the result!

Bring on MORE of "The Hill"

New Zealand Targa

Look out for "Deals & Gurney" on the 24th-29th of October as they blast all over NZ in the 996 Turbo 911, for the Dunlop NZ Targa.

"Big Nige" will be in the LX A9X Torana Sheep Chaser too.

Check out www.targa.co.nz   for more details...

Well, what an eventful Targa NZ it was for "Deals and Gurney"!!

Big Nige did great, getting 2nd in class and 33rd overall, which has nicely acquitted the sheep chaser and its crew.

Deals was about 20k's into a 28k stage and decided he didn't like the colour of his Turbo 996 Porsche and put it over the edge at 100kph. Scott explains his emotions leading up to the fateful corner in his usual high pitched lisp: "Well the whole silver Porsche thing is just sooooooo two minutes ago. I got to the 19km mark and I was thinking how black, or maybe a nice magenta would be a much more unique colour, not to mention slimming, so I thought bugger it!! I'm going to pith this rolling tribute to mediocity down the cliff...It was only when I got all 4 wheels airborne I remembered it wasn't insured..."

The result of his decision was a very bumpy ride down a 250 meter slope. After 30 or so rolls, the hapless car was completely destroyed and the boys are very lucky to be alive.

Looking down from the road, at the slope Scott chose for his flight. Use the tree in the middle, between the two land slips as a guide for the next shot.

You can see tree from the above shot. The piece of silver on the bottom right is from one of the cars 15 impacts on the way down.

The view from the other side of the ravine.

Gurney had his own take on the event: "It was my fault, I blame myself: At the start of the stage, I told Scott to lay off the buffet breakfasts, as he was starting to fill out his race suit. He flashed a cruel look at me and muttered something about how silver always made him look fat. I knew then and there, he might do something drastic. I just didn't know to what extent..."

Chilling proof of my you should NEVER call Scott Juniper a fatty.

Both of the racers only recieved minor injuries explained Scotty: "I was fine, but when we got out of the car, Danny started slapping me with an open hand, whilst hissing furiously. It was then that I was deeply hurt."

Scotty re-enacting his position after Danny and him stopped fighting and made up.

And for the car? "Well the panel shop has looked at it and decided with a bit of bog and a chisel, she will be looking fine soon. On about the 19th roll, I decided magenta with white side stripes would just look simply super!"

The above recorded events may or may not be true.

Australian Muscle Car Masters,

30th of October 2005.

Eastern Creek Raceway, just a little bit west of Parramatta.

Check out

www.chevron.com.au

For more details on what you can expect

What a great day! It was consistently the wettest motorsport event I have ever been involved with. Yet thousands of people showed up. Everyone, from the organisers & drivers, down to the officials was wrapped with the event.

The question that will now remain unanswered is how big would it have been if Nature had played ball? We'll never know. But you can be assured next year will be MASSIVE.

I was very impressed with the amount of people from interstate and overseas that showed up. Their dedication is very heartwarming: It's always nice to know there are more loonies like yourself out there.

I must send out a VERY BIG thank-you to all the people who came and took the time to say nice things about my families car care products and how we present the cars. Very good stuff and keeps us aiming high!!

Another nice endnote is that with the pouring rain, we let everyone into our marquee area, the cars were not roped off and were surrounded all day by thousands of wet, wide eyed people. Usually in those circumstances, we have to get a bit concerned. That was not the case at all; of the thousands of people who crammed in, I only had one person decide the Camaro looked like a nice place to sit. That is pretty bloody impressive & something we are thankful for!

Good on you Chevron and the ARDC

for putting an a corker event!

Bathurst 1000 Schedule

Unfortunately we aren't attending this years GREAT RACE, but if your like us and joined by the hip to a TV for the duration of the event, get your recording stuff ready, as Channel 10 were recently in the sheds and paid some attention to some of our more famous touring cars.

Armed with some rare archive footage of the cars racing, and footage of how they are today, the breakouts will be a huge bonus for muscle car fans.

"...If I hear one more ginger joke out of you buddy..."

The one and only Mark Oastler on his favourite topic: Muscle Cars.

.

"Front engined hey...who would have thought"

Middle man Steve Wood, producer of channel 10 Motorsport, getting a guided tour from another self confessed "Moffstang" fan, MO.

PLUS...

Channel 10 were also on hand to capture the debut of the KB "Channel 9" Camaro at Willowbank Raceway recently.

I can't say too much, but expect on track and in car footage of the car, with the inimitable KB at the wheel. There will also be rare period footage and what will have to be another classic KB interview (Is there any other?).

Grrrrrrr...

MO: "Geez, that Bowden's Own wax looks good, but does she GO KB?"

KB: "Yes."

Noosa Beach Classic Car Show 2005

The Noosa Beach Classic Car Show, is a what you would call a "pleasant" event. It is very well run and always has a wide selection of interesting cars and people.

Combine this with shady trees and the close proximity of the cafe mecca that is Hastings St, and you get an event that is very....well, pleasant!

This year Lamborghini is the Marque of the show. Expect a large number of great looking cars from all over Queensland and NSW, conking out, overheating and blowing up enroute to Noosa.

Keep an eye out for the odd AC Cobra getting around Noosa on that day!!

October the 2nd, at that nice little park on the left, as you head into Noosa Heads.

www.noosacarclub.com

Picture a beautiful warm day, in one of the nicest parks on the Sunshine Coast, surrounded by some of Australia's finest cars. Then combine it with an infectious happy mood and you have the 2005 N.B.C.C.S.

A BIG congratulations must go to Noosa Beach Classic Car Club on a very successful day. Best of show was a "Bowden's Own" car and so was the all important People's Choice. So we are more than happy with the results!!

The highlighht of the day has supplied by the chap who bought along his 1950's Chris Craft runabout (Of course the park is waterfront, this IS Noosa!!).

BEAUTIFUL boat! Got my choice as the most gorgeous thing there and the chap won a bottle of Bowden's Own metal polish...

"Just because"!
